Pietermaritzburg's City Hall to get a face lift

2008-10-02 08:05

THERE is R5 million about to be spent upgrading the city hall to bring the fine old building back to its central role in the life of Pietermaritzburg. And to celebrate, Music Revival and Parklane SuperSpar have joined forces to present Symphony in the City, a concert of classical and popular music with the full KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in the city hall on September 7 at 7.30 pm for 8 pm.

Acting city manager Rob Haswell explained at the launch of the project last week that the city and Parklane SuperSpar will jointly undertake repairs and a clean-up to make the hall a fitting venue for a superb evening in what is one of the best concert halls in South Africa. Haswell, Music Revival's Christopher Duigan and Parklane's Chris Hodgkins all expressed excitement at the prospect of a real gala event centred on the grand old building. Concert goers are encouraged to adopt a dress code of smart/elegant to up the sense of

The musical programme for Symphony in the City includes the Adagio from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto (played in the movie, Out of Africa), Figaro's sparkling patter aria, Largo al factotum from Rossini's Barber of Seville, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and a selection of dance and ballet music from Johann Strauss's The Blue Danube, Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, Cole Porter's Night and Day, De-Lovely and the ever popular Riverdance. Maestro Naum Rousine will conduct and the soloists are the London-based Joanne Rozario (clarinet and saxophone), Federico Freschi (baritone) and Duigan (piano).

The renewed collaboration between Music Revival and Parklane Superspar follows the success of their Concert in the Park in June, a charity fundraiser that attracted well over

5 000 music lovers. So those who enjoyed themselves in the sunshine there can now have their music indoors, in the building that should be the centre of the city's life. Secure, patrolled parking will be provided in Church Street, at the Bessie Head Library, in Freedom Square and in the Provincial Government/Tatham Gallery parking area.

Tickets range from R75 to R135, and there will be a cash bar operating at the interval.
