Pig mutilator to appear in court

2008-01-31 00:00

A Kokstad man will appear in court on charges of animal cruelty after he allegedly inflicted horrific injuries on a pig.

Doug Wolhuter of the SPCA in Kokstad has reported the matter to the National Council of SPCAs after he found a pregnant sow lying on a hessian bag with a shattered skull and severe lacerations to three legs.

"There were deep lacerations through the tendons of the hock, and bone has been shattered. Her skull was nearly totally demolished and she even had an eye cut through. The sow was … breathing through the vast open space where her sinus passage was," Wolhuter reported.

He said he was told that the police at Mt Ayliff had been called to the scene early that same morning.

"The police had declined to open a case and said that the best they could do was have a ‘meeting’ with the accused. The accused has allegedly carried out similar acts on five other pigs."

The SPCA lodged an official complaint against a Mt Ayliff police inspector who checked the case in the morning, but did not take any steps to put the sow out of her misery.

It took Wolhuter five hours to lay the charges against the accused as the police insisted that the issue could be resolved through speaking to the accused.

Wolhuter said that it appeared that the pig had been attacked for trespassing on the accused’s land.

Pictures sent to The Witness of the injured pig were too disturbing to publish.
