Pilot reinstated as PMB Aero Club member

2014-09-19 00:00

WELL-KNOWN KwaZulu-Natal pilot John Campbell has been reinstated as a member of the Pietermaritzburg Aero Club.

The SAA pilot confirmed shortly before setting off on a flight to Germany yesterday that the club had capitulated on Wednesday. This was the day before the dispute over his membership was due to be heard in the Pietermaritzburg high court.

“The committee has reinstated my membership and agreed that the club will pay my [legal] costs.”.

This was in spite of their “bravado” and press statement that the appropriate forum for dealing with his allegations was the high court, he said. “They were clearly at a loss for words when the time came to do so. I obviously feel vindicated by the outcome. It is unfortunate for the club membership that I had to go to these lengths to obtain redress. I afforded the committee every opportunity to resolve the situation before it came to this,” he added.

Asked about the safety concerns he had raised in his court papers, Campbell said he was pleased to observe that the safety issues that had concerned him, as well as the Civil Aviation Authority, appeared to have been addressed by the club. “ It seems to me that the club has now got its house in order,” he said.

Campbell went to court when his membership of the Aero Club was “summarily terminated”, allegedly because he raised concerns about safety issues and what he termed to be “a dangerous trend of non- compliance with regulations at the club”.
