Pinetown Boys’ indoor hockey team keep fighting till the final whistle … and win

2013-08-27 00:00

IF an example was needed that no game is over until the final whistle, it was Pinetown Boys’ High School’s indoor hockey team taking on Kloof High School’s U18 team in the schools’ indoor hockey league.

Playing in pool B of the league at Westville Boys’ High School, Pinetown started strongly. Mondli Ngidi hit home to open the scoring thanks to captain Callum Myburg’s cross.

Pinetown held the advantage until late in the first half when Kloof found the equaliser to have the sides changing ends at 1-1.

As in the first period, Pinetown took the advantage yet again, with Mthobisi Madlala doing the honours. This strike saw Kloof change gear, as they came hard at Pinetown who, despite keeping them at bay with some brave defensive stick work, allowed two quick goals to suddenly be 2-3 behind.

A quick team talk saw the Pinetown lads rise from the canvas in what was a must-win situation. Mpumulelo Ngcongo netted the equaliser and with three minutes remaining, Myburg smashed the winner. This took the final score line to 4-3.

The result sees Pinetown still having a chance of making the play-offs after beating Kingsway and drawing with Crawford La Lucia in their previous games.

The remaining fixtures are on August 29 against Westville Boys’ High School at 5.20 pm and on September 5 against Kearsney at 5.30 pm.

These are tough games, but the master in charge of hockey, Marc Henry, knows his team will be no pushover if they keep playing with the same pride and passion that has been evident throughout the league to date.
