Pinetown come back from early wickets to beat Quins

2013-10-10 00:00

PINETOWN Cricket Club are out of the blocks in the Challenge League, knocking off their first win of the season against Umbilo Harlequins at Lahee Park on Sunday.

Having lost their opener the previous week against UKZN with a sloppy middle order batting collapse, Pinetown put their heads down to pull off a six-wicket win.

Asked to field first, Pinetown wasted no time gaining the upper hand, the new ball pair of Andrew Dyer (2-27) and Kyle Gilham (1-21) keeping it tight and striking early with three quick wickets.

Quins settled down with a steady middle order partnership, Kevin Kettle (21) showing application in a steady knock. However, Pinetown all-rounder Grant Romeril (2-18), left-arm orthodox spinner Barry Dyer (2-15) and captain Tim Spence (2-20) applied the brakes to any substantial total, a needless run-out also adding to Quins’ woes.

At 86-9, Quins needed a miracle to make a game of it. Credit must be given to Quins captain Dieter Liebenberg (16*) and opening bowler Sylvester Sauli (18) for a spirited last wicket partnership of 33, setting Pinetown 120 to win.

With a possible bonus point on offer, Pinetown’s batsmen strode to the wicket with purpose, needing to score quickly while keeping wickets intact.

Quins had no thought of making it easy for the hosts. Sauli stepped it up with two early wickets, having Pinetown opener Kaashief Abdulla LBW and number three Kyle Stirling caught at cover, both for ducks and in the first over.

Romeril (41) has enjoyed starts in all his innings to date — warm-up matches and league. He continued to show his value to the side, pairing up with Bruce Kruger (47) in a game-changing third wicket partnership that effectively won the game with a bonus point.
