Pinetown confident ahead of crucial Challenge League clash with UKZN

PINETOWN Cricket Club’s first team are hoping last weekend’s bye has prepared them adequately for Sunday’s all-important Challenge League showdown with UKZN at Hammond Field.

This match could determine who wins the league and gains promotion to the Premier League next season.

Both sides have been the front runners in the league, with Pinetown’s only defeat to date being the opening fixture against UKZN. In the context of the Challenge League, Sunday’s showdown is immense.

Heading into the Christmas break, Pinetown topped the league by five points, but UKZN had an opportunity to square matters in their meeting with Simplex last weekend. However, the match is under scrutiny with KZNCU — the union not revealing the reason — resulting in no points being awarded until the matter is resolved.

This means Pinetown still has the edge, but the odds favour the students, who have a game in hand over their main rivals.

However, Pinetown’s player coach Barry Dyer knows how vital a full house of points will be in claiming the title.

Sunday’s 50-over clash starts at 9 am.
