Pinetown policeman shot

2011-05-07 00:00

A DURBAN police captain was shot and killed while reversing out of his driveway yesterday morning in what is believed to be robbery.

Captain Mervin Reddy (39) worked for Pinetown crime intelligence. He was leaving his Newlands West house when he was shot three times at about 6.30 am yesterday.

It is alleged that a man approached him and fired shots, then stole his cellphone and firearm.

The divorced father of a nine-year-old son, Reddy, was dead on arrival at hospital. He had been a policeman for more than 18 years.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Sally de Beer said the murder of Reddy brings the number of police officers killed in KZN this year to nine and nationally to 27.

“Last year there were 25 killed in KwaZulu-Natal out of 101 killed nationally. All these officers were killed using a firearm,” she said.

No one has been arrested.

Reddy was killed nine days after Constable Thando Nonhlanhla Zwane (24) of the Durban Port Security Service and her fiancé Sibahle Blessing Buthelezi, who worked as a data typist at Greenwood Park police station, were shot and killed in Durban. Buthelezi’s relative has since been arrested.

Police Commissioner Bheki Cele condemned the murder. He said yesterday a major fuss is made when someone dies as a result of police action, but the deaths of many police officers passes virtually unnoticed. The SA Police Force is losing about four to five officers a month, mainly at the hands of criminals.

“It is a crisis [but] you don’t see that anywhere.” Despite police officers being “brutally” killed by criminals, it does not make the news in the same way as “police brutality” does, Cele added.
