Pinetown’s eyes on return to Premier Div

2013-08-29 00:00

AHEAD of the new club cricket season, Pinetown Cricket Club’s mission is to return to the Premier Division after falling into Stream 1 of the KZNCU’s Challenge League last time.

The club has a rich history in the Premier League. Players and management will be keen to restore order and resume a rightful place among the top clubs come the end of this season.

For the time being though, it’s business as usual, with management upbeat that the new season will see a new and fresh approach on the pitch. Many of the first team players from last season have remained at the club, creating a solid base to make a statement in the months ahead.

Players worth watching are former KZN amateur batsman Bruce Kruger and SA U19 ace Greg Oldfield. With Tim Spence, Andrew Dyer, Grant Olivier and Kyle Gilham, the side are a blend of youth with experience of playing in the top league.

Nick Tatham, a hard-hitting batsman and more than useful off spinner, returns from studying in Grahamstown and a short stint in Cape Town. A former KZN Inland U17 player, he is keen to strap on the pads and roll up his sleeves for the good of the club.

Off the field, longtime coach Gary Glisson has emigrated to Australia, meaning Barry Dyer is the new man at training sessions.

Training for senior players has started on Wednesdays from 4 pm. Ahead of the league, which starts at the end of September, there are three warm-up matches, against Railways, Reservoir Hills and UKZN.
