Pipe burst: cars slide and crash on freeway

2010-05-13 00:00

A RESIDENT of Pietermaritzburg incurred an estimated R40 000 in damage to his vehicle when he lost control on the N3, apparently as a result of a burst water pipe, yesterday morning.

Four other vehicles, including one belonging to the KZN Human Settlements Department, also slid in the mud and were damaged when they left the road.

Jonathan Pillay (29), who works for uMngeni Municipality’s fire department as a firefighter, said he was driving to work in Howick at about 5.30 am when he lost control of his Golf 4 near Hilton.

He said that at the area of the accident there was lots of mud running across the N3 northbound.

“I was the first one who was involved in the accident. I was driving in the fast lane when my car slid across the slow lane before it hit a barrier and spun back into the road and then stopped,” said Pillay.

He said that immediately after he had moved his vehicle to the emergency lane, other cars, including a Golf and VW Polo, slid on the mud and ran into the barrier. He said a Nissan belonging to the KZN Human Settlements Department also spun out of control and struck the barrier.

“I got lots of injuries. I sustained concussion and a minor injury on my hip, neck and back. I have been to the doctor for treatment,” he said.

He estimated the damage to his 2003 Golf at R40 000.

Road Traffic Inspectorate spokesperson Zinhle Mngomezulu confirmed the accident, but said it was not a serious one.
