Pirate DVD operation busted

PIRATED hardcore pornography is being sold to underage pupils in the city.

That’s according to city detectives who bust a pirate DVD operation in Northdale yesterday.

Captain Jageesh Singh said 200 hardcore pornographic DVDs were among about 1 500 DVDs confiscated by the organised crime investigation unit yesterday.

They also seized blank DVDs, DVD writers and computer equipment.

A 28-year-old man was arrested during the raid and will be appearing in court in Pietermaritzburg tomorrow.

Singh said that besides the fact that it is illegal to copy films, the sale of pornography is regulated. “But it’s also being sold to anyone who wants to buy it, including underage kids.

“It’s a buck in the pocket for those manufacturing the DVDs.”

Singh said pornography should be sold only at “adults only” registered outlets.

He put the street value of the DVDs at around R225 000.

Singh said the combined operation between the provincial crime intelligence network and Tracing KZN from Durban uncovered sophisticated computer equipment, including a multi-stacking DVD writer used for the manufacture of the fake DVDs.

“We appeal to the public to stop piracy as it is against the Copyright Act and the penalty is high.

“For a first offender, the penalty is R5 000 per DVD or three years in prison,” he said.

Singh also warned that people who buy pirated DVDs could be prosecuted.

“On any film you watch there is a warning about copyright.”

He appealed to anyone with any information about piracy to call him at 082 444 3160.
