Pirates to play United at Woodburn

MARITZBURG United will make a small piece of history when they play Soweto giants Orlando Pirates in Pietermaritzburg for the first time in a Premier Soccer League game at Woodburn Stadium on Wednesday, April 8.

The game had originally been set for December at Chatsworth Stadium, but in a clever piece of negotiating following the postponement of that match, United managed to switch the fixture to Woodburn.

The original game was postponed because it fell four days before Pirates’ Telkom Knockout final against Ajax Cape Town, which the Buccaneers lost 2-1.

“SuperSport had the rights to the game and we said we did not mind having it postponed, but it meant we would play Pirates away on January 14 (United lost 2-1). Then the return match would be at Woodburn,” United chairman Farouk Kadodia explained.

Kadodia said United are also trying to switch their midweek home matches against Moroka Swallows (February 28) and Wits (May 2) to evening games, now that lights have been installed at Woodburn.

United, who had a morale-boosting 2-1 away victory over AmaZulu in Chatsworth on Saturday, play five of their nine remaining PSL fixtures at Woodburn.

“We want to appeal to our fans to emulate the last matches of the First Division promotion campaign last season, and the NFD final, and come in numbers to support us in those games,” Kadodia said.
