Pistorius trumps Madiba in media

2014-03-04 00:00

WORLD-WIDE the Oscar Pistorius name is fast on its way to overtaking that of former Nelson Mandela in terms of media use.

Tonya Khoury of Data Driven Insight (DDI) said Madiba’s death had seen 122 000 digital stories generated from his death to his funeral.

By yesterday afternoon, 80 000 stories had already been written about Pistorius — of which 60 000 were published between Sunday and yesterday.

“I have never in my life seen something like this,” said Khoury, who has 18 years’ experience as a media analyst.

“By 3 pm yesterday #OscarPistorius had been named 8 880 times in one hour. It is totally insane.”

DDI found in its study that almost 90% of the discussions around Pistorius was neutral, but almost 10% included the word “guilty”.

The U.S. are communicating the most about Pistorius — almost twice as much as South Africans are. Germany is in second place, followed by South Africa and the UK.

Locally, five in 10 of the subjects trending on Twitter yesterday involved the Pistorius trial.
