Pitbulls’ owner in court over domestic worker’s mauling

2014-10-29 00:00

THE owner of five pitbull terriers that mauled a domestic worker and other people in Raisethorpe on October 15 appeared briefly in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Niven Harilal (28), of Gogas Road, faces a charge of keeping ferocious dogs. He was not asked to plead.

Harilal elected to apply for legal aid and the case was postponed to December 11 for further investigation.

The Witness reported that Harilal’s domestic worker, his wife, and a garden service worker who went to the aid of the woman, were bitten by the family’s five dogs during the incident.

They sustained serious injuries.

Harilal told The Witness at the time that he’d owned the dogs from birth and had not had a problem with them before.

However, neighbours claimed the dogs were “vicious”.
