A PIPER aircraft was forced to crash-land on a Durban beach after its pilots experienced an engine problem yesterday evening.

The plane crash-landed on sand at Addington beach at about 5.10 pm. It had just taken off from Virginia Airport. Its occupants wanted to conduct an aerial site inspection.

South African Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Kabelo Ledwaba said, “While it was in the air it developed engine failure, and was forced to make an emergency landing.

“Both wings were substantially damaged, but no one was injured.”

He was not able to divulge the name of the company that owns the plane.

Paramedics from Netcare911 rushed to the scene. They assessed the condition of the pilot and co-pilot at the scene and then took them by ambulance to the Netcare Umhlanga Hospital, said Netcare911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks
