Plans to rebuild Bulwer houses

2009-11-24 00:00

THE departments of Human Settlement and Social Development, together with the Provincial Disaster Management Unit, convened a meeting at Bulwer yesterday to plan the rebuilding of houses destroyed in a storm early this month.

On Thursday and Friday the same community was again hit hard by torrential rains, which severely affected people living in tents after losing their homes.

The first hailstorm destroyed about 182 homes, killing Shiyekile Mbelu, injuring 56 and leaving about 2 000 people displaced.

A second person, identified only as Mrs Nkomo, died of her injuries in hospital a few days later.

Ingwe Mayor Gugu Luzulani said the Human Settlements Department plans to start building in two weeks’ time.

“On Thursday we saw Social Development and Home Affairs arriving to assist with identity documents and pension cards to those who have lost them during the storm. To us this means a lot,” he said.

The Gift of the Givers Foundation has provided gas stoves and more blankets to the tent dwellers.

The Gift of the Givers has also consolidated building material from donors. Spokesman Ebrahim Alley said as soon as enough material is in place they will start building houses in the area, giving priority to the disabled and the aged.
