Plaudits pour in for charl the champ

2011-04-12 00:00

“I WENT to Augusta and all I got was a green jacket,” Charl Schwartzel tweeted soon after his epic win at the 75th U.S. Masters late on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Schwartzel also marked the 50th anniversary of Gary Player’s maiden win at the iconic first major of the year in the best possible fashion, holding off a host of stars in the most frenetic of finishes.

Schwartzel birdied the final four holes to steal the crown after as many as eight players had held or shared the lead on a drama-filled back nine.

Aussies Adam Scott and Jason Day shared second on 12-under par, two strokes behind Schwartzel.

Schwartzel’s win was well received amongst peers, with overnight leader Rory McIlroy — who shot a dismal 80 — saying that he was a deserved winner.

“I’m gutted … but well done Charl Schwartzel. Great golfer … and even better person,” the Ulsterman commented on his Twitter account.

The most recent South African winner at Augusta — Trevor Immelman (2008) — had another reason to be excited by Schwartzel’s breakthrough win.

“Finally, we can have South African food at the Champions dinner next year,” he quipped. That was referring to the traditional Tuesday dinner for champions held every year before the tournament, with the previous year’s winner choosing the menu. — Sports Reporter.
