Plumtree backs young guns to perform

JOHN Plumtree has opted for youth in covering the gaps left by departing Springboks for tomorrow’s awkward Currie Cup match against Griquas in Kimberley.

The Sharks coach has made five changes to the team that pipped the Lions in Durban last week and has ignored more obvious replacements, dipping into the reserves instead.

With wing Henno Mentz now out of favour, Lwazi Mvovo takes over from Odwa Ndungane on the wing, while Andries Strauss, surprisingly ommitted after his committed defensive effort against the Lions, makes way for Riaan Swanepoel and Waylon Murrayretains his place.

Swanepoel, who has fared well off the bench, will make his first start for the Sharks.

With Frederic Michalak still sidelined by a painful hip, Monty Dumond takes over fromSpringbok Ruan Pienaar at flyhalf.

Keegan Daniel is back at number eight for the unavailable Ryan Kankowski, while locks Albert van den Berg and Steven Sykes are overlooked as Alistair Hargreaves starts in the second row.

Sykes will be on the bench, while Van den Berg is not included in the match 22.

Returning from a lengthy injury break is Bok tighthead BJ Botha, who will be on the bench.

“We have two big away games away — they travel to Cape Town next Friday to face Western Province — so the next fortnight is crucial,” said Plumtree.

With Griquas captain, former Michaelhouse and Natal flyhalf Herkie Kruger sidelined by injury, coach Dawie Theron has named a revamped backline to face the Sharks.

Conrad Barnard, another former Shark, moves to fullback while Gavin Passens is on the left wing in place of Egon Seconds who is on the bench.

SA sevens player MJ Mentz, the younger brother of Henno, starts on the other wing, while Tobie Botes comes off the reserve bench to play flyhalf.

Prop Ruaan du Preez, a late withdrawal against the Lions a fortnight ago because of flu, returns to the starting line-up against the Sharks, while hooker Hans van Dyk is preferred to James van der Walt.

The battle-hardened Gareth Krause takes over the captaincy from the injured Kruger.

The match kicks off at 3 pm tomorrow.
