Plumtree keeps faith with young guns

WHILE the other Currie Cup provinces have been quick to include their Springboks in their starting line-ups for the weekend, Sharks’ coach John Plumtree has kept changes to a minimum for tomorrow night’s final round outing against Griquas at King’s Park.

Just one current Springbok, flyhalf Pat Lambie, has been included in the starting line-up as Plumtree has rested the six other national squad members while rewarding the young players who have taken the Sharks to the top of the Currie Cup log.

Lambie replaces Meyer Bosman at flyhalf while Plumtree has also brought back Cobus Reinach at scrumhalf for Charl McLeod in the two changes to the backline which did duty against the Free State Cheetahs last weekend.

The only change among the forwards is at hooker where the injured Pieter Dixon is replaced by Kyle Cooper.

Plumtree has loaded his bench with four returning Springboks — wing Lwazi Mvovo, hooker Craig Burden, prop Jannie du Plessis and flank Marcell Coetzee — among the replacements.

The Sharks’ two remaining Test players, prop Beast Mtawarira and flank Willem Alberts, have been given the weekend off.

In contrast to the Sharks, the Blue Bulls and Western Province, facing crunch games and the threat of relegation, will not rest any of their Test players and both teams yesterday included seven Springboks in their starting line-ups.

Plumtree said the coaching staff had looked at each individual player in easing the Springboks back into the mix and “making sure we do what’s best for the team”.

Griquas coach Pote Human, looking for a win which would take his fourth-placed team through to the semi-finals, has made one injury-enforced change with centre Walter Venter replacing the injured veteran JP Nel.

“Luckily Venter has been involved in the team ever since we started out, so he is no stranger to pairing up with Jean Stemmet,” Human said.

“His ability to dominate the tackle situation with his physicality will come in handy in Durban.”
