Plundered Pearse Trust in safe hands

2010-09-24 00:00

A RENOWNED welfare organisation has been chosen to be the recipient of a trust fund that was previously used to grant illegal loans to councillors of the Msunduzi Municipality.

The Community Chest, a well-run fund distributor, will take over the Pearse Trust Fund, which was originally entrusted to the city mayor on a temporary basis until a worthy organisation that benefits the poor was found to take over it permanently.

Readers may recall The Witness reporting a few months ago that the intervention team discovered that the fund was being abused.

Msunduzi administrator Johann Mettler promptly put a stop to the abuse and said all illegal loans granted to councillors will have to be paid back.

In a report tabled at yesterday’s executive committee meeting, acting chief financial officer Mahen Sahibdeen said R654 171 is available in the fund but there is an amount of R72 727 which still has be paid back.
