Pmb Cop: trial postponed

2009-05-27 00:00

A PIETERMARITZBURG police officer, Visagren Naicker (40) of Alexandra Road police station, who is charged with assaulting a member of the public in the charge office on March 23 last year, appeared briefly in the magistrate’s court yesterday.

The case was postponed at the request of defence advocate Brad Osborne, who said the defence is currently involved in discussions with the office of the KZN director of public prosecutions about the case.

Magistrate Raymond Kunene adjourned the trial to September 3.

Naicker is charged with slapping Mohamed Hack several times during the incident inside the charge office at Alexandra Road on March 23 last year, as well as with defeating the ends of justice for allegedly opening a false charge of assault against Hack on March 27 last year.

He has not yet pleaded to the charges.

The case received widespread publicity after video footage of the alleged assault was televised on E-tv’s Third Degree programme.
