Poaching: Another rhino killed, toll reaches 92

POACHERS shot, killed and de-horned another white rhino inside the iMfolozi game reserve on Wednesday.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife media liaison officer Jeff Gaisford said the rhino is the ninth to be killed in KwaZulu-Natal this year.

He said EKZNW Wildlife officers on patrol at about midday on Wednesday spotted the tracks of a group of men in the iMfolozi Wilderness Area inside Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park.

”A radio call soon had the iMfolozi anti-poaching unit doing a follow-up of the tracks, which led them to the de-horned carcass of an adult male white rhino lying in the shallows of the White Umfolozi River in the Mbhuzane section of iMfolozi.”

Gaisford said the tracks led back across the river and out of the park on the southern boundary.

The SA National Parks reported earlier this week that South Africa is experiencing the highest level of rhino poaching ever.

Sanparks said that so far this year, South Africa has lost 92 rhinos to poachers, including four black rhino.
