2014-08-12 00:00

THE Durban University of Technology and Arts for Humanity are celebrating Women’s Month with the Women for Children art and poetry collection.

The exhibition, to be staged at DUT’s Art Gallery on the Steve Biko Campus in Durban from today until August 29, aims to give visibility to the voices of women and to create a platform through which they can express their concerns regarding the rights and welfare of all children.

The art prints and poetry have been created by 25 artists and 25 poets from South Africa, the developing world and the international community.

They include Lebogang Mashile, a poet, actress and author, who is currently an ambassador for the Film and Publication Board’s ‘Say NO to child pornography’ campaign and presenter on the parenting and pregnancy show Great Expectations on e.tv on Mondays at 11.30 am. She has prepared the poem My World In Mama’s Hands for the exhibition.

Durban artist Gabisile Nkosi, who has previously contributed to Art for Humanity’s ‘Break the Silence’ HIV/Aids Billboard and Portfolio Project, says of her work, Sisterhood: “As a female artist who has personally experienced domestic violence, it is my privilege to contribute to this campaign.

• The exhibition will be opened at 6 pm today by Professor Nqabomzi Gawe, former deputy vice-chancellor of institutional support at DUT.
