Poetry sees Nqobile (14) off to Johannesburg

2009-06-26 00:00

COMING from a disadvantaged school with prefab buildings did not discourage Nqobile Ndokweni (14) from uMsilinga Primary School near Copesville. She will represent the city in a national poetry competition next week.

The grade seven pupil won the Youth and Water competition, which is an initiative by the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs to encourage pupils to learn about the importance of water, environment and cleanliness.

Ndokweni, who will be heading off to Johannesburg, was chosen from many other pupils in the province, after she recited a poem that she wrote about the importance of saving water.

Ndokweni said that she is confident she will do well as she is passionate about poetry.

Speaking to The Witness, she said: “I wish there could be more programmes and opportunities where children from underprivileged schools were able to show their talents”.
