Police accused of assault on protesters, damage to houses

2011-09-01 00:00

POLICE will investigate allegations of assault and damage to the homes of people who protested in Plessislaer on Tuesday.

The investigation follows a report by KwaZulu-Natal violence monitor, Mary de Haas, alleging that residents of Georgetown and Plessislaer were assaulted after they demonstrated against lack of service delivery in the area.

De Haas alleges that on Tuesday night area police arrested the alleged protest leaders and that in the course of the arrests, police assaulted residents and broke down the doors of some houses.

She said about nine people were arrested and some were injured.

De Haas raised questions about why people were arrested in their homes and not during the protest.

A police spokesperson confirmed the arrests and said that the allegations would be investigated.

She said the arrested people face charges of public violence and damage to property.

Area councillor, Sbono Majola, said he was not aware of any police attack on people nor of any damage to houses caused by police.
