Police bust Dalton heist gang

2008-12-04 00:00

FIVE men were arrested in connection with an armed robbery at a shop in Dalton this week. Police said three men entered UCL Stores and after asking about the price of fertiliser, held employee Runita Singh (38) at gunpoint and demanded cash.

The robbers tried to gag Singh with tape, but failed and she shouted for help.

The suspects jumped into a waiting navy and grey Mercedes Benz. They were joined at the gate by two men who had held up the store guard and taken his shotgun.

The Dalton police were alerted and circulated a description of the vehicle, which was spotted on the road to Wartburg and chased to Swayimane. Four of the men fled into a plantation, leaving one in the car. He was arrested while police chased the others. One was quickly nabbed, while dogs tracked the others to a riverbank.

Police recovered the money and firearms with the serial numbers filed off. The vehicle was found to have been stolen in Pietermaritzburg earlier this month.
