Police bust high-end marijuana grow lab

2014-07-18 00:00

FIELDS of hydroponically grown dagga worth nearly R200 000 were seized in a police swoop on a Camperdown lab near Durban yesterday.

It is understood that the lucrative harvest had been destined for dealers in Pietermaritzburg, Hillcrest and Durban.

A raid saw heavily-armed officers swarming a house which had been converted to cultivate fields of the illicit crop.

The farmer, who has yet to be named, was arrested by police at the secluded home, which had been completely fitted with lighting, irrigation and ventilation systems.

A greenhouse attached to the house was home to larger plants in the operation.

Members of the KwaDukuza Cluster Task Team, TRT, Highway Patrol and Chatsworth Crime Intelligence were behind the swoop.

A police source close to the investigation, who cannot be named as he is not authorised to speak to the press, said that the haul would be worth approximately R200 000 on the street.

“The dagga that was seized is of a very high quality because of the way it was grown, and if one looks at the operation, a lot of effort was put into maintaining the farm.”

The source added that the dealer had been “operating for years” before the intelligence-driven operation.

Recently an upmarket Kloof home understood to be a mandrax manufacturing plant was raided and R20 million worth of chemicals seized.
