Police calm voters’ spat in Jika Joe

2011-05-20 00:00

POLICE had to intervene to calm tension between DA and ANC supporters at the Jika Joe informal settlement yesterday.

The havoc was allegedly caused by the victory of DA candidate Naleni Atwaru in Ward 33, which dismayed local ANC supporters who thought their candidate Bongani Mkhize had won. “We are here at the Tatham stadium to celebrate a victory for the ANC in the Msunduzi Municipality, however what has upset our members is that they were sworn at by DA supporters while they were marching to show support for the organisation,” he said, adding their posters were torn down by DA supporters.

However, Atwaru denied that DA members caused the trouble. “Our members were celebrating the victory, I guess the ANC supporters had not received the news when they provoked them by intimidating and vandalising a [house] door of one of our supporters.”

Atwaru commended the work done by the SAPS who managed to calm the tempers of the angry ANC supporters.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Phindile Radebe said the community must consult relevant authorities when they have a problem. She said all those who have reported cases that were not followed up must come forward so that the cases could be solved.
