Police foil funeral fraud

2008-08-04 00:00

Speedy work by police resulted in the arrests of three suspects wanted in connection with fraud.

Police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said Ntombifuthi Ngidi (45), Noma Khoza (27) and Brian Mbambo (21) were arrested last week following police surveillance.

Mdunge said Ngidi took out funeral cover with Old Mutual for her sister and on June 22 went to Home Affairs to apply for a death certificate, claiming her sister was dead.

Mbambo, a Home Affairs official, and Khoza, a mortuary employee, helped Ngidi secure a false death certificate.

Ngidi then applied for a R50 000 insurance pay-out.

“The sister received information that according to Home Affairs she is deceased and reported the matter to police,” Mdunge said.
