Police: fraud victims urged to come forward

2010-03-04 00:00

DURBAN police officers from the commercial crime unit have asked people who may have been defrauded by Desmond Pillay (33) to come forward.

Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker said Pillay has been charged with 14 counts of fraud and appeared in the Durban Commercial Crime Court in December last year. The case was remanded to Friday for further investigation.

Naicker said Pillay is alleged to have made deals with people who needed houses, convincing them that he had access to houses that were going to be auctioned.

He is alleged to have asked victims to pay a deposit for these houses so that he could prevent them from being sold at an auction.

“After the victims paid him the deposits, it was alleged that he disappeared with the cash. Fourteen victims have come forward and opened cases of fraud after the suspect did not refund their deposits. After a lengthy investigation, the suspect was arrested and charged with 14 counts of fraud,” said Naicker.

Anybody who has been defrauded by the suspect is requested to contact Sergeant Nathi Myeza on 031 327 8800 during office hours or visit his office at John Ross House, Durban.
