Police inspector kills kids and herself

2009-10-19 00:00

PRETORIA — A woman police officer from Centurion shot her baby daughter and 12-year-old son with her service pistol before committing suicide with the same weapon.

The bodies of Inspector Anneke van Niekerk, who worked at the police criminal records centre in Pretoria, and her five-month-old daughter Mia, were found next to each other in the main bedroom of their house on Saturday.

Van Niekerk’s wounded son, Shaun (12), was lying nearby.

He died a few hours later at the Unitas hospital in Centurion.

Clive van Niekerk, Shaun’s father and the ex-husband, discovered the gruesome scene when he went to pick up his son.

Police spokeswoman Inspector Wanda Olivier said Van Niekerk’s service pistol was found on the scene.

She said that when Shaun’s father showed up at the house on Saturday, there was no answer. “The doors were open so he walked in and soon found the mother and children in the main bedroom.

“The boy was shot in the head and the baby in the body. He called the police immediately,” said Olivier.

ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said the mother and baby were already dead when paramedics arrived.

Paramedics performed first aid on the boy immediately, and raced him to the Unitas hospital.

“He sustained severe head injuries,” said Vermaak.

He said the paramedics were very traumatised and received counselling afterward.

Police officers on the scene were also traumatised. One said: “It wasn’t a pretty sight”.

A neighbour, 31-year-old Sudesh Moodley, said he heard three noises that sounded like fireworks at about noon on Saturday, but thought it was Diwali celebrations.
