Police kill suspect in raid on gang

2009-11-27 00:00

POLICE have warned that criminals must think twice before committing a crime as they clamp down even harder on criminal activities.

The warning comes after a suspect was shot dead and three were arrested in a sting operation by members of Durban’s organised crime unit in KwaMashu yesterday.

The suspects are wanted in connection with several robbery and murder cases.

Crime unit officers received information that four members of the “Knocker” gang were hiding in a house KwaMashu’s C-section. The modus operandi of the gang is to observe people who are drawing large sums of money in banks and then follow them home. They rob their victims when they leave their vehicles.

Police spokesman Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the officers went to the house in the early hours of the morning and knocked on the door.

“One of the suspects opened the door and started firing. Police retaliated and shot the man dead. Three suspects were arrested on the scene,” he said. None of the policemen was injured.

The men will be charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder and murder. They will appear in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
