Police misled?:‘Kidnapped’ woman could be probed

2012-10-16 00:00

AN Nkandla woman who claims to have been kidnapped for ransom and locked in a container with 11 others, could be investigated for misleading the police.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Vincent Mdunge said they were still “treating the matter as serious”, but “if the complainant has lied there will be repercussions”.

He said several pleas were made to families to come forward and report if their daughters were missing since the beginning of September. “So far no one has come forward, but we will keep on investigating,” said Mdunge.

The Nkandla woman told authorities she and 11 others were tied naked to chairs, guarded at gunpoint, gagged and repeatedly raped. One woman was allegedly shot dead.

The kidnappers demanded R20 000 from her family, eventually settling on R5 000 after negotiation. The police rescued the 23-year-old victim as she attempted to withdraw a portion of the ransom in Pinetown on September 26.

The victim was adamant her kidnap happened and told The Witness: “All I want is for these guys to be caught”.

“I don’t know where I was because every time we went to the bank they covered my face with a black cloth or told me to lie face down.”
