Police ‘not looking for suspect’ in Northern Cape family murder

2012-04-09 00:00

GRIQUASTAD — Police in this small Northern Cape town indicated yesterday they are not looking for a suspect in the deaths of a farmer, his wife and their teenage daughter on Good Friday.

The bodies of Deon Steenkamp (41), his wife Christelle (40) and their daughter Marthella (14) were found in their farmhouse by son Don (15) when he came in from doing chores on Friday. All three had been shot. Reports said there was no sign of struggle or robbery at the scene.

Police spokesperson Colonel Hendrik Swart said: “We are looking at the available witness statements and clues found at the scene.”

The Steenkamps were apparently killed in the early evening. Don told police he was in the barn when he heard shots and ran to the house. He found the safe open.

“He said on the way to town he saw two firearms, a .22 pistol and a .357 Magnum revolver, lying in the road and handed them over to police,” said Swart.

He said Don gave a statement to police on Saturday and accompanied detectives back to the farm to point out certain things.

Andries Steenkamp, Deon’s cousin and Don’s guardian, said he is heartsore over speculation about the crime on social media. “Everyone has their own theory, but we will wait for what the police investigation throws up,” he said.

Henriette Truter, the manager of a restaurant opposite the police station in Griquastad, said she heard Don screaming there about the shooting on Friday evening and walked over to comfort him. She said he washed blood from his shoulder and knee while she phoned his uncle. “He said he didn’t know what to do,” she said.
