Police warn of armed robbers

POLICE have warned residents to be on the alert following armed robberies targeting homes for cash and other valuables in the Cleland and Scottsville areas in the last two days.

Police spokesman Senior Superintendent Jay Naicker said that yesterday at midday, a robbery took place at Point Finch Road in Cleland.

Thembeka Madlala (33), a domestic worker, was busy with her chores when she was confronted by two unknown men who produced firearms and then forced her into the main bedroom.

They covered her face with a duvet cover and went to a safe in the room, forcing it open with an unknown object and removing cash to the value of around R20 000 and various items of jewellery. They fled in a silver VW Polo with an NUF registration number.

The incident follows another in Scottsville on Wednesday when a home in Golf Road was targeted.

In this incident, Lauretta Sibanda (24) left her home locked and secured, said Naicker. But when she returned at 1 pm she noticed that the front door was open.

She found that her two computers, a DVD player, a digital camera, a Samsung television and cash amounting to R7 000 were missing.

Naicker said Sibanda stated that before leaving the premises, she was approached by two unknown men who were also driving a silver VW Polo with an NUF registration number.

“Under false pretences, they inquired from her if she knew a certain person and left,” said Naicker.

“Police are warning the public to take note of the modus operandi being used by this gang, which is believed to be operating in the Alexandra Road policing precinct. Anyone with information regarding the above incidents is requested to contact Captain Pieter van Zanten at 033 845 7722 or on his cell at 079 500 0592.”
