Policeman shot as crowd turns violent

THIRTY policemen were dispatched to the Muden area yesterday after a police officer was shot and stabbed in the early hours of the morning when a group of men turned on two policemen who were attending to a domestic violence complaint. One of the suspects was also shot.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Phindile Radebe said the Muden police were called out to a domestic violence incident, in which a man assaulted his grandparents.

When they arrived at the scene, about 20 others had joined the suspect and together they turned on the police. They managed to get a firearm away from one of the cops, and he was shot in the head and thigh. The crowd of men also stabbed the injured policeman.

Radebe said the mob set a police vehicle alight.

“The other policeman managed to escape and was not hurt. The policeman who was shot was taken to hospital in Pietermaritzburg in a serious condition.” She said she was unable to release the name of the injured policeman.

Radebe said police officers were sent to the area to search for those who had participated in the attack.

“We have the dog unit, the national intervention unit and a helicopter searching there.”

Radebe said it has not yet been established who shot one of the suspects.

The police arrested one of the suspects in Greytown yesterday. He will appear in court on Tuesday.
