‘Polite’ burglars were as scared as their victim

2010-10-13 00:00

WHEN 64-year-old Howick shift worker Kathlyn Caldecott was woken up on Monday morning by noises in her home she thought she was dealing with wild monkeys.

Instead she surprised an intruder rifling through her kist.

Luckily for her the man was just as startled as she was and, despite threatening her with a crowbar, he did not harm her.

“He got such a fright.

“He said to me ‘I’m sorry m’am, I didn’t think you were home’,” said Caldecott.

The intruder, who was of a small build and wore a bright orange and green jacket like those worn by construction workers, then showed Caldecott the crowbar he was carrying, saying: “I can kill you, I can kill you”.

He followed her into the kitchen, where he was joined by a taller man who entered the house from outside.

“The little one asked if I have got a safe and I said no. He said, ‘Have you got gold?’ I showed him my hands. I don’t have any rings, watches or jewellery.

“I then said to them why don’t they just get out quickly and go, and they just turned and walked out.

“That was it … I still can’t believe that I behaved that way … I was quite shattered.” said Caldecott who works at a frail care centre.

She said that on leaving the house the men had locked the back door behind them to stop her following them. Through a window she had seen them jump into a gold Toyota Tazz and drive away.
