Political parties fined for unremoved posters

2014-09-19 00:00

MSUNDUZI Municipality has finally made its move on political parties that have not removed their election posters.

Posters are being removed and 13 parties have so far been fined a collective R11 720.

The ANC still had 189 posters up, months after the two-week deadline for them to be removed after the May election.

The ruling party has to pay a penalty of R3 800.

The NFP and IFP are the other big culprits. The NFP had 65 posters and 43 flags up, and was fined R2 590, while the IFP, with 66 posters and three flags, owes R1 410.

In a report given to the Executive Committee yesterday, acting municipal manager Dr Ray Ngcobo said that despite the mayor giving parties until the end of August to comply, they had not removed their posters. Ngcobo said the signage section then went on a sweep through the city from September 4 to 10 and removed posters. He said a few remained, mainly around taxi ranks.

According to Ngcobo, their work was far from over. The main areas and routes listed will continue to be monitored and inspections carried out throughout the city, to ensure that any remaining posters are removed. He added that posters and banners removed will be retained in storage as proof for the next 60 days and will then be disposed of.

The removal tariffs are R20 each for posters and banners, and R30 for flags.
