ANYBODY who works in Willowton will know that there is particulate in the air, just as anyone who lives in Hayfields will know of noxious smells emanating from the municipal dump. Anybody with eyes to see will know that our rivers are polluted. Some of the industrial polluters are also known, but seem to be able to get way with their anti-social behaviour.

Conditions of widespread pollution are not irreversible. In the 19th century, the Thames in Britain was an open sewer and London was afflicted by so-called peasoup fogs of inpenetrable thickness. Now salmon are being caught far upstream in the river and London’s notorious peasoupers are a relic of history as much as horses and carriages.

As was pointed out on this page last week, we have plenty of experts. We have enthusiastic NGOs like Duct working for cleaner rivers and streams. Yet until officialdom buys into it and brings the political will to bear, we will not have the integrated water resources management which is essential to cleaning up the environment.
