Polokwane rocks with Zuma victory parties

2007-12-20 00:00

Polokwane rocked last night, as Jacob Zuma supporters celebrated his victory as newly elected President of the ANC. The party of note was held in Polokwane businessman Cassel Mathale’s guesthouse. The who’s who of Zuma supporters were there, including close allies Philani Mvundla of Greytown — who will be organising the victory celebrations planned for Greytown this weekend — and Vivian Reddy.

A lucky delegate who scored an invitation to the party described it as a gathering of the walking wounded — those who had been sidelined by President Thabo Mbeki — the likes of Mac Maharaj and Mathews Phosa.

However, there was a price to pay yesterday as many delegates suffered from heavy heads and struggled to make it to the commission sittings where resolutions had to be taken on a number of proposed policies. Conference organisers also had a hard time ensuring that delegates went and voted for the 80 National Executive Members (NEC) whose names will be announced today.

The party continued, as the ANC Youth League held a big bash last night in one of the hangars of the Polokwane International Airport.

Despite the fierceness of the election battle, supporters of Thabo Mbeki accepted their defeat with dignity. Many of those interviewed said they were disappointed and upset, but that the ANC is a democratic organisation and as such they accept the outcome of an election, even if they are on the losing side.
