Pools: Tardy municipal staff blamed for late opening

2012-10-15 00:00

TARDY municipal staff members who did not bother to procure funds for repairs and maintenance early enough are to blame for the late opening of the city’s swimming pools.

Msunduzi municipal manager Mxolisi Nkosi told council’s executive committee (Exco) that the staff knew from January that the swimming pools were due to open in the first week of September and in all that time they failed to procure what they needed. “They came to us in August asking us to secure items under emergency regulations. I turned them down and told them that we are not going to breach procedure because they failed to get what they needed on time,” he said.

Exco were told of other problems regarding the swimming pools.

A staff member was allegedly found to be drunk on duty and another is being investigated for charging residents for private swimming lessons at the municipal pool.
