Poor KZN presence in Lotto SA marathon

2010-10-02 00:00

A SMALL field of around 800 runners will compete in this morning’s National Lotto SA Marathon Championships in Durban.

Defending champions Enos Matalane and Riana van Neikerk will return to Durban and will be considerably happier with the October weather conditions as opposed to those of February last year where the humidity restricted any chance of runners achieving their true potential.

However, the minimal support from the provincial team means that once again it seems likely that the first past the post will either be a foreign runner or someone who has been overlooked by his province.

City to City winner Prodigal Khumalo will be only too happy to welcome the up-country visitors to his home turf where he is very accustomed to dealing with the humidity and the Durban routes.

The Zimbabwean Mr Price runner may well have recovered sufficiently to make an impact and many eyes will also be looking at the talented, if erratic, Sipho Ngumane, who will be running as an individual and not in provincial colours.

Apart from Matalane, George Mofokeng and Enoch Skosana are amongst the best of the championship athletes while van Niekerk, Gloria Baeba, Charne Bosman and Dimakatso Menong appear the leading ladies in title contention in a rather disappointing entry list.
