POPULAR Durban restaurateur Marco Conte is recovering in hospital after a serious cycling accident in Durban North yesterday.

Conte, the owner of Italian restaurants Mamma Luciana’s and Marco’s, is understood to have fallen from his bicycle while on Browns Drift Road after hitting a piece of roadside debris.

Paramedics rushed to the aid of the injured Conte who sustained serious chest trauma and multiple fractures.

Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the 44-year-old Conte was found lying in the middle of the road after he was thrown from his bicycle with severe injuries.

It is understood that Conte remains in a serious but stable condition in the Netcare Umhlanga Hospital.

Sharks CEO and Conte’s business partner John Smit said he had been made aware of the accident.

“From what I have heard Marco was on his way to meet the cycling group for a ride and I am not sure if it was dark but I understand he may have hit a pothole and snapped the front fork of his bicycle.

“I have been trying to contact him without success but I believe he was in hospital having some x-rays done,” Smit added.

Efforts to contact Conte’s family were unsuccessful at the time of going to print.
