Port Elizabeth move: decision day for united on thursday

WILL Maritzburg United fans have a PSL team to support next season? It appears that we will only find out on Thursday.

Chairperson Farouk Kadodia told The Witness that a potential deal with a locally based sponsor had fallen through and that he and his partners would spend the next few days deciding the club’s future.

United have been offered a three-year deal worth R20 million to make the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth their preferred home venue for next season.

Kadodia confirmed that the club had declined to accept the potential sponsor’s offer of R1 million per year.

He said: “We felt that the offer would devalue our brand.

“We were looking for something in the region of around R4 million per year.”

The club will ask the PSL this morning to extend their deadline for submitting their preferred venues for next season’s fixtures. All clubs were due to have done this on Friday, but United were granted extra time and now look set to only inform the PSL of their decision on Thursday.

“We didn’t want to have meetings straight after the game on Saturday,” said Kadodia.

“We will sit down this week and come to a decision without any emotions involved.”

United moved three of their matches to Port Elizabeth this season in a deal worth around R2,5 million.
