PORT Natal School can hold their heads high after taking the honours at the inaugural sevens rugby tournament hosted by Voortrekker High School in Pietermaritzburg.

They were in revered company, mixing it with the hosts, Hilton College, Westville Boys’ High School, Maritzburg College, Weston Agricultural College, St Charles College and the KZN Schools’ sevens team.

In the event, played over two consecutive Friday evenings, Port Natal, captained by Merlynn Pieterse, finished top of their pool, beating St Charles 35-7 and Voortrekker 38-5.

Playing against Hilton in the semi-final, Port Natal dug deep in a tough encounter, coming through 24-10 to meet Maritzburg College in the final.

College had taken care of Westville Boys’ High in their semi-final and the final lived up to expectations, with spectators kept guessing until the final whistle.

Great running saw both sides score some great tries and with half-a-minute left to play, College had the edge, 19-17. However, Port Natal had a lineout and having secured the ball, managed to break away for the match-winning score to lift the trophy 23-19.

Sports director at Port Natal Jan van Straaten shared in the team’s achievement.

“This is an outstanding result for the boys and to see how they kept on playing, never giving up, showed tremendous spirit. It’s fantastic for them and our school,” he said.
