Port Natal rugby night series gains momentum

2014-02-11 00:00

THE third round of the Port Natal rugby night series on Friday produced some interesting results from the five matches played.

Port Natal were involved in a tough showdown against the Glenwood Invitational A side and despite going down 15-6, they gave a good account of themselves. It was only eight unanswered points in the final few minutes that secured Glenwood’s win after there had only been a point separating the sides at 7-6.

As is tradition at Port Natal, the first team played in their training jerseys, having to earn the right to wear the white jersey that gives the team their “White Knights” name.

Most agreed after Friday’s match that the players deserved that honour and they will play the rest of the tournament in their hallowed and respected colours.

In other results, Pinetown Boys’ High perhaps produced the upset of the tournament, beating George Campbell 14-5. In recent years, these two schools have enjoyed some intense battles on the rugby field, with Campbell having the edge come the final whistle.

This was a first win for Pinetown in many a year and bodes well for the season ahead. After losing to Port Natal in their opening game, Pinetown just held off the Durban Development side in their second game before coming good in their third match. Their match tonight against DHS should be one to watch.

Also on the night, George Campbell seconds beat Pinetown seconds 17-10, DHS beat DBN Development 48-5 and Glenwood Invitational B beat Port Natal seconds 13-10.
