Port Shepstone hit squad probe

2012-10-01 00:00

SOUTH Coast murder dockets and files dating back five years are to be re-opened as another potential police hit squad is investigated in the province, according to a newspaper report.

The Sunday Times reported yesterday that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate was looking into cases of the Port Shepstone Organised Crime Unit, one of whose members, Warrant Officer Basil Crouse (47), handed himself over for arrest late last week.

“We are appealing for anyone with information on any cases to come forward,” IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini was quoted saying.

Crouse’s brother, Captain Nico Crouse, was one of two other members of the unit arrested with members of the Cato Manor unit in August on charges of murder and racketeering, the report read.

It added that Port Shepstone taxi boss Sandile Mzizi (30) — who was arrested in July and is Basil Crouse’s co-accused — had accused Crouse of planting a .45 pistol at a murder scene where alleged hitman Mkhulisi “Pat” Mvubu, was found dead in April.

Mzizi and Crouse have been charged with murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

Crouse was granted R5 000 bail on Friday by the Hibberdene Magistrates’ Court. Mzizi is already out on bail of R1 500.

Today, Crouse must make the first of his weekly reports to the investigating officer, Hermanus Pienaar, in compliance with his bail conditions.

At the hearing, prosecutor Renee Naidoo said: “The state certainly views the evidence as very strong.”

Crouse and Mzizi were ordered to appear again on October 11.
