Port Shepstone keen on new prison

2010-07-28 00:00

HIBISCUS Coast municipal manager Sbu Mkhize reported to a council meeting yesterday that the municipality intends to build a high-security prison in Port Shepstone.

Mayor Nolwazi Shusha has written a letter committing the municipality to the project to the department of Correctional Services, Mkhize said, adding that the plan is still on and that they are urging the department to fund the project.

The municipal manager said the prison is one of five new-generation prisons. The others are to be built in Paarl, East London, Nigel and Klerksdorp.

While technical hitches and a lack of funds have apparently delayed the Port Shepstone project, the municipality is still committed to it.

Mkhize said earlier that the building of the other four prisons has gone ahead without environmental challenges.

However, at Port Shepstone environmental challenges emerged at all the potential sites identified by the council, delaying progress past the planning stage.

The council emphasised that the prison must be based in Port Shepstone.
