Posters inspired by Soccer World Cup

2009-11-10 00:00

A GROUP of young artists, whose work was recognised in the open category of the Ithala Ub’ciko poster competition, will be showing their work at an exhibition at Kizo Art Gallery, Gateway, until November 16.

The exhibiting artists include: Thabani Hlela (Umlazi), Thubelihle Hlela (Umlazi), Sibusiso Mbokazi (Tongaat), Thabani Dlamini (Ulundi), Xolani Cebekhulu (Eshowe) and Mandla Khuzwayo (Eshowe).

Those chosen to show their work were selected by the judges — Nontobeko Ntombela (DUT Art Gallery curator), Nathi Gumede (Kizo Art Gallery head curator) and Manqoba Mbatha (communications manager, Ithala Limited).

Artists were commissioned to make an artwork inspired by South Africa’s hosting of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, provided with the necessary art materials and given time to complete their works. The selected artists also spent a day workshopping their ideas with art theory lecture Themba Shibase at the DUT fine art department.

Those works can now be seen at the Kizo exhibition, which marks the culmination of a partnership between Ithala Limited and the Kizo Art Gallery to promote the arts in the province. Inquiries: 031 566 4324.
