Pothole pranks no joke for uMngeni’s municipal boss

2013-01-09 00:00

FED-UP Hilton residents have not lost their sense of humour completely, but the municipal manager would have liked to be let in on the joke first.

Reader Carey Wylde-Hughes sent in this picture of a pothole in Bergview Road.

The sign planted in the middle of the hole reads “Bergview Dam, dangerous fishing area”.

Wylde-Hughes said residents had resorted to measures such planting signs in potholes after asking the uMngeni Municipality for years to attend to the hazards, in vain. She said she had taken more than 100 photos of potholes along a road that is only 22,8 km long.

Approached for comment, uMngeni municipal manager Mpilo Ngubane said: “We appreciate the fact that our ratepayers are able to make us aware of these service delivery backlogs.”

He said he had responded to “each and every” request ratepayers had sent to the municipality since his tenure started.

Ngubane said he had not received any complaint from Wylde-Hughes, and “in future I will appreciate that concerns come to the municipality before they are sent to newspapers”.

He said the municipality’s plans to attend to potholes in Hilton this week were disrupted by Sunday afternoon’s storm, which meant its workers spent all of Monday cleaning up.

“The road-patching crew is in Hilton today as we speak, and the intention is to finish the whole area in two weeks.”
