Power outage affects PMB shoe firm

2012-03-10 00:00

A FAULT at the Retief Street sub-station caused an hour-long power outage across the city and up to Hilton yesterday morning.

Among the businesses that were affected was Eddels Shoes, where the lost hour and a half equated to 250 shoes at R200 a pair, said production director Mark Veness.

“Although we were without power for an hour, the machines take up to half an hour to heat up, so in effect, we lost an hour and a half.”

“We will also now have a problem meeting delivery as we were meant to deliver 1 400 pairs of shoes to a particular customer. We will not be able to make up those numbers in the time that we have been given.”

Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce CEO, Melanie Veness, said: “Power outages are a real challenge to business, operationally and financially.”

Many callers to Weekend Witness complained that they could not get through to the municipal call centre.
